Chicago: 30% of Black MSM are HIV+

Chicago: 30% of Black MSM are HIV+
by: Victor Maldonado
Thu May 28, 2009 at 18:51:27 PM EDT

The Windy City Times is reporting that at its monthly board meeting on May 19, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) for the first time released data on HIV infection rates among city men who have sex with men (MSM), describing the results as "sobering."

Between August and December 2008, CDPH sampled 570 MSM at various Chicago locations. Of respondents, 17.4 percent (91) were HIV-positive. HIV prevalence was 30.1 percent among blacks, 12 percent among Hispanics and 11.3 percent among whites. Black MSM under age 35 were seven times more likely to be infected than their white counterparts (30 percent vs. 4.2 percent).

Victor Maldonado :: Chicago: 30% of Black MSM are HIV+
Of respondents who tested positive for HIV, more than 50 percent were unaware of their infection - including 67 percent of blacks, half of Hispanics, and less than a quarter of whites. Among the MSM unaware of their infection, 50 percent reported not having an HIV test in the previous year. Thirty-nine percent of respondents stated the primary reason for not getting tested was a fear of the result. Of the men who tested positive, all knew where to find an HIV testing location.

According to the survey, risky behaviors included multiple or concurrent sex partners, unprotected anal sex, drug/alcohol use prior to sex, and lack of knowing a partner's HIV status prior to sexual activity. Concurrent relationships were more common among blacks (37 percent), compared with 30 percent for whites and 28 percent for Hispanics. In contrast, drug/alcohol use was more common among whites and Hispanics, with 40 and 43 percent acknowledging use before or after sex, respectively, compared to 39 percent for blacks.

Nikhil Prachand, an epidemiologist with CDPH's STD/HIV/AIDS division, said the survey's findings mirror national data. Programs such as the Chicago Black Gay Men's Caucus already are working to address racial disparities revealed by the data.

Cause and Effect (0.00 / 0)
The article does not provide a link to the actual research. I want to know what the researchers hypothesized what they believed was the cause of the nearly triple the black MSMs HIV infection rate as compared to the hispanic and white MSMs communities. Any good research would postulate why they believed this is so.
Anyways, here is my hypothesis on the causes of this tragic finding:

1. Higher percentage of closeted black MSMs vs. hispanic and white MSMs.
1a. Higher percentage of closeted MSMs due to christianist black culture...e.g. more rigid than that of white and hispanic

2. Poor self esteem.
3. Cultural victimization within the black community
4. Poor access to HIV outreach and prevention programs

The black community needs to take ownership of this devestating problem and start attacking it wherever it can. I am assuming that there are scores of people and organizations doing just that black, white, hispanic and otherwise. However, it is obvious from these sobering statistics that the root cause analysis of this issue has not been seriously dealt with. Lastly, since the church is such a strong force and community in black culture, all arrows IMHO point in this direction as the first place that needs to embrace this issue and start working their asses off to start saving themselves.

Bottom line: Putting ones head in the sand is not bliss, but is deadly.

It's WAAAAY more complicated... (0.00 / 0)
than you suggest. I'm black and in Chicago so I do have some perspective on this.
Part of the problem is that the white gay community in the city is NOT particularly welcoming to black LGBT folks. People stay closeted when they feel they have nowhere else to go. There is a real physical seperation between the gay community and the bulk of the black population. There is almost no interaction between the two communities on a person to person basis. Why is this important, because in Chicago, there are actually quite a few LGBT affirming black churches. (plus I think there is more open awareness of the hipocracy of our religious institutions...this being the REAL Gotham we all know that someones got something going on the side whatever it is) Please remember that the church that the media villified Obama about is actually welcoming of LGBT people. More significantly, at a political level, there is more intersection between the two communities in City Hall (This is the REAL Gotham City, all the power brokers know each other and are equally corrupt). So the divide is DEFINATELY cultural/socioeconomical than traditionally religous.

Thus I com back to the race issue. The black institutions that actually do deal with these issues are generally grossly underfunded and not well maintained. The "common" public or NGO institutions are all outside of the black community and are largely run by white men. There is a real indifference in the Chicago gay community toward the black population in general and the black gay community is pretty far removed from it.

I can speak personally on this issue precisely because at one point I was eager to work to try and bridge the divide. I actually get angry when I hear some of the local LGBT or HIV groups talk about how they "try" to reach out and are looking for black LGBT folks to speak out. I ACTIVELY sought out those organizations to try and be that person. I was ignored and I know that I was not the only one to experience that. I've even heard from some sympathetic white gay associates, they they have been shocked at the indifference.

This is why every time I see this topic in the LGBT press I start fuming.

It's even more complicated than this (0.00 / 0)
When I first moved to Chicago 20 years ago, there was a distinct "black gay community" and that no longer seems to be the case.
I've almost always lived on the far North Side and I haven't seen that particular disconnect, but then again Edgewater and Rogers Park are defintely areas where the 2 populations do co-mingle (and I know that this is not the "gay community," proper.Of course, Edgewater and Rogers Park is not the bulk of "the black community" in Chicago but it is significant to solving this problem, IMO.)

Again, I really thinks much of this gets back to the very real issue of xenophobia present in both communities. And it will take more than simply the white gay community reaching out, it has to occur on both sides.

The Northside (0.00 / 0)
and the South Side might as well be on two different planets. I grew up on the Southside and can tell you that they are very different worlds where never the twain shall meet (well except maybe in Hyde Park). It tells you something when all of the social services are housed on the Northside where as all of the people that need the service are out south. How is it that the bulk of HIV/AIDS services and organizations are housed away from the people with the highest concentration of infections? I spoke with a rep from the Test Positive Awareness Network (one of the main HIV groups in the city) and we talked about how they could reach more people. I was told that their services was exclusively limited to the Northside. How does that make any sense?

But was that always true? (0.00 / 0)
Was it always true that most HIV infections were on the South Side or is it that the necessary adjustments in locales for HIV/AIDS services haven't changed with the times?
And if the black community on the South Side has enough power to put the plans for a GLBT high school on the West Side on hold, then I think that they have enough power to light a fire under the necessary asses to get HIV/AIDS prevention services on the South Side.

Sci Fi, you make an EXCELLENT point (0.00 / 0)
About LGBT affirming churches in the black community in Chicago.
There are LGBT affirming churches on the North Side too (you know what I'm really saying here!): indeed, Chicago is a city of churches. At the Prop 8 rally Tuesday, there were a few speakers that spoke about religious faith, as did many of the protestors. Religious faith is very much a flavor of the Midwest, regardless of race.

I mention this not only because of the issue of this thread but also more generally as the issue of marriage equality has arrived in the Midwest first through Iowa and now in Illinois with the pending civil unions bill [we have most, if not all other GLBT protections (ENDA, hate crimes) on the books, here.] It might also be possible for churches to form liasions as well as gay organizations (it's a Midwest thing!)

South Beach banking on crowds at annual Urban Beach Weekend

Follow me on Twitter During Memorial Weekend for the Latest Hot Spots and Things to Do- www.twitter.com/shortfuseguy

Miami Beach is once again gearing up for a throng of hip-hop aficionados this Memorial Day weekend -- despite a weak economy and waning popularity -- for the largest urban festival in the country.

In years past, upward of 250,000 hip-hop lovers have flocked to South Beach for Memorial Day -- dubbed Urban Beach Weekend -- renting out hotels, packing nightclubs and taking the party out into the street.

But in a sluggish economy, clubs, restaurants and hotels are banking more than ever on the booty-shaking crowds to bring in dollars.

''South Beach relies on tourism, and everything is pretty much down,'' said Micha Porat, marketing director for Washington Avenue nightclub SoBe Live, which is hosting parties featuring hip-hop artists like Rick Ross and DJ Kahled, as well as Heat star Udonis Haslem. ``But when it comes to Memorial weekend, it's such a specific weekend for that crowd, that everybody is going to come regardless.''

So far, the signs are promising.

''Urban Beach Week hits Miami once again and every single celebrity will be there,'' boasted the website BlackBeachWeek.com, one of the driving forces behind the unofficial Memorial Day weekend festivities in Miami Beach. ``The pool parties, the clubs, the beaches, the entire strip will be lit up like a Christmas tree on steroids.''

It seems South Florida is in for some rocky weather this week including the possibly of our first named storm of the 2009 Hurricane season. Hurricane season technically does not start until June 1, but it is not uncommon for storms to pop up before then. Bring the umbrellas and be sure to check your airline for possible flight delays if you are traveling to South Florida this week.

Areas to Avoid

Overtown- area NW of downtown Miami
Comments: This is arguably one of the poorest area of the country. Avoid this area at night especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. High drug and crime area.

Liberty City-
Comments: Every large city has a hood area and Liberty City is ours. Liberty City is fine during the day, but at night, you should avoid this area if you are unfamiliar with the area. There are a lot of historic places, good shopping, and good soul food restaurants in “the city”. Just be cautious and be careful as you would at home. Use common sense.

Things to Do During the Day

Scooters on South Beach
Comments- Several places on South Beach to rent from on the beach, and it relatively cheap. Great way to see South Beach!

Miami Seaquarium- www.miamiseaquarium.com
Comments: Home of Flipper (YES, from the movie!) Our version of Sea World.

Key West
Comments: 3 hours drive South of Miami. If you are here for an extended vacation, might be a nice trip to do with friends. Check our Duval Street, Key West is party town. Stunning views on the way down; you will be surrounded by nothing but water.

Orlando- Universal Studios, Disney World, Sea World
Comments: 3 hours drive North of Miami. Take Florida Turnpike which is a toll road, appropriately $17 each way, will cut your drive time down a bit. Or take I-95. Orlando has the world famous Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Sea World and Disney World. Yes, this might add an additional expense to your trip. But if you have time and money, visit our neighbor to the North. Tampa, Florida is 45 mins to an hour west of Orlando and is home to Busch Gardens-Tampa.

Jet Skiing
Comments: Relatively cheap, check out South Beach for jet skii rental companies.

Pleasure Boats at Bayside
Comments: A lot of fun with a group of friends. Moderately price. During the day take a tour of Miami, Fisher Island, Star Island and the Bay, on a huge boat. At night, take the same boat, and dance the night away with the DJ on the bay.
High Speed Boat Ride
Comments: Kind of expensive, but if you are into thrill rides, this trip is for you. Go flying across the open ocean on go-fast boat.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours over the Coral Reefs
Comments: See the fishies swim below your feet. Check out Bayside for vendors.

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino- www.seminolehardrockhollywood.com

Cocowalk in Coconut Grove- http://www.cocowalk.net
Comments: Great shopping and dining. Movie theater and clubs are located here too. Depending on which direction you take, check out how you go from hood to trendy within a matter of blocks.

Andresflava Response to Sizzle Miami Dwight Powell

5/15/09 11:18pm

Good Evening to All I hope you have had a productive week and everyone is enjoying there evening Hi this is Andre Allen of Andresflava I have been writing my blog for 4 years now and with my blog i write and express what is on my mind or whats goin on in the world because again its MY Blog and i am entitled to my opinons. I look at the mirror every morning and proud to be a BLACK GAY MAN CONTRIBUTING AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE INTHE LIVES OF OUR BLACK GAY COMMUNITY.

I want to first say i have read everyone's response and I thank you all for your comments forwarded message and PURE DRAMA this post has caused. I commend all promoters on their tireless efforts to provide quality events all year long I know your job is not easy at all,

Mr. Powell I have much respect for you as a person and I thought we had put our past in the past when you came to DC a few weeks past to Promote Sizzle Miami, I appreciate all you. But I will not be BELITTED BULLIED and HUMILATED.

A blog is set up so that someone can express their opinons on a particular subject or matter. AS IT WAS WRITTEN SEVERAL TIMES in my Miami Correspondents' post WHAT HE WRITES ON MY SITE IS TOTALLY HIS THOUGHTS AND COMMENTARY. YES ITS MY BLOG BUT NOT EVERYTHING HE WRITES I AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH I GIVE HIM THE SPACE TO WRITE IT AND COMPLETE ACCESS. WHEN DID FREEDOM OF SPEECH BE A BAD THING. WE AGREE TO DISAGREE AND I WOULD HOPE THAT MY LITTLE BLOG IS NOT THAT POWERFUL THAT HE HAS IGNITED HATRED AND BITTER STATEMENTS TOWARDS ME.

AGAIN I HOPE EVERYONE AROUND THE COUNTRY ENJOY THEIR MEMORIAL WEEKEND HOLIDAY. MUCH LOVE AND SUCCESS TO DWIGHT POWELL OF SIZZLE MIAMI, DARYL WILSON OF DW PROMOTIONS, SAN JUAN BROTHERS EVEN THOUGH THEIR EVENT IS NOT HAPPENING. MARIO D. HARRIS III OF WASSUPNATL THEIR EVENTS PLANNED FOR MEMORIAL WEEKEND AND LABOR DAY WEEKEND ANY OTHER PARTY PROMOTERS DOING ANY EVENTS IN 2009.

BELOW IS KING D. LAMAR RESPONSE TO DWIGHT AS WELL:

I am sorry that you feel that my commentarty “Greed is Ruining Pride” is counter productive to what you trying to achieve at Sizzle Miami. I would beg to differ that you are trying to help our community. Just to clear the air, as stated in ALL FOUR of my commentary pieces, the opinions expressed in my article are SOLELY MINE, and not that of AndresFlava or Andre Allen himself. My commentary was unedited and not previewed by anyone except myself. I am not interested in a war of words with you Dwight, but your comment deserves an immediate response. If you would like to continue this dialogue offline, Andre has my direct email and contact number. I would never object to a constructive adult conversation about this particular topic.

I do agree that Sizzle is no different from WHITE and BLACK prides as far as the events are concerned. IntheLifeATL, New York General Pride, White Party in Miami, Houston Splash, and DC Pride, all have featured a vendor area or village, such as Sizzle; a concert with a major recording artist, such as Sizzle; defintiely a White party, like Sizzle, and most, if not ALL, feature some type of nightlife, like Sizzle. However none of these places, events, or Prides, charge any of the outrageous prices that Sizzle does, however they are supplying the same type of events and “services” you are. Explain??? You tout that Sizzle is a “quality event” and the reason for the increased cost is due to the fact you run and promote for the entire year. Excuse me?!! Does IntheLifeATL, the White Party, DC Pride, all are run year round as well. Again, explain? How is Sizzle different? If I am not mistaken all of these places have a central headquarters, the same as Sizzle as well, however you tout Sizzle is different. Ran must the same, but in some weird way Sizzle is different.

At Sizzle’s inception you encouraged and promoted that Sizzle was for everyone. TRUE OR FALSE? Now in 2009, Sizzle has miraculously because “exclusive”. Sizzle is now for the Millionaire’s Club of Black and Gay society? If that is the case, Dwight you did a model call or let’s just say a public relation and marketing blitz disguised as a model call across the country. You DID NOT go to these cities across the country and hangout where the Millionaire’s were. You hung out and promote where the average joe’s hung out. Not to say my fellow black peers are average joe’s and don’t have the money. Case in point, if you marketed to the average joes, you should cater to the average joes. It is not that you lowered your expectations, you marketed to them, you should cater to them as well. The attitude you expressed in your comment was condescending and bourgeois. And again you stated, “ As long as I have a clientele that are in a position to afford the lever of service that we have to offer here at Sizzle Miami, then we have a win-win situation.” Can you please get off the island and join us the mainland? Please turn to CNN and watch for a few hours. Again you marketed to the average joes, as your clientele, and ccording to CNN, the average joe’s are not doing too well. And some of the millionaires, too.

As far as in uninformed individual, that is not true. I have been going to Prides and other “quality events” longer that Sizzle has been around. Promoters come and go, Prides wax and wane with crowds from year to year. I have worked closely with promoters to know business and have invited to by promoters to perform at Pride events. So that statement has not merit. But Dwight, please pay close attention to what is happening in D.C. Daryl Wilson was in the same position you are, a couple of years ago. And if you have read my commentary and compare it to today’s events with the decline of his grip on DC pride events….it is a fortelling of things to come, if you don’t decide to change your attitude and bring Pride back to what it used to be. I was there in the beginning when Sizzle was at Club Boi…please remember your humble beginnings. Don’t get to BIG for your britches, as my grandmother world say. Love you regardless,

King

Anti-gay church to protest in South Florida

From the Desk of King in Miami
Courtesy of Miami Herald

A small, radical Midwestern church that has made headlines for picketing Iraq War veterans' funerals plans to protest an America it believes has gone pro-gay and anti-God with demonstrations in South Florida beginning this weekend.

Its targets are Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale; St. Thomas Episcopal, University Baptist and Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables; Temple Israel in Miami; the University of Miami Law School graduation, and the consulates of Japan, Israel, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, according to the website of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan.

At least 15 protesters are making the trip, church member Shirley Phelps-Roper said in an interview.

Led by the Rev. Fred Phelps, Westboro is not affiliated with the mainstream Baptist church. Its 75 members, mostly Phelps' relatives, gained notoriety in 1998 when they picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was beaten to death in Wyoming.

''They are bigots and anti-Semites,'' said Andrew Rosenkranz, Florida director of the Anti-Defamation League. ``We have notified law enforcement and told religious leaders not to engage them.''

''We're going to go about our normal business,'' said Pastor Bill White of University Baptist, where protesters plan to arrive Sunday morning. Several other church leaders said they also planned to ignore the demonstrations.

If you have a Sizzle VIP pass, GREAT! Definitely take advantage of it. But, here is my list of recommended clubs if you want to take a break from Sizzle and GO LOCAL! Or if you are broke and can’t afford to go to the Sizzle nightclubs everyday! LOL. Guaranteed most places will be packed since it’s Memorial Day Weekend. Most clubs and lounges will have no cover or reasonably priced cover charges. The covers charges have been listed for those clubs I have made contact with. Check out each clubs’ website for info, directions, and updates on covers, etc. I have added comments to the club I have visited recently. I have added a couple of Sizzle events you must experience, so save a few dollars for that.

Greed Is Ruining Pride- the Final Installment

From the Desk of King in Miami
Follow me on Twitter During Memorial Weekend for the Latest Hot Spots and Things to Do- www.twitter.com/shortfuseguy

EXTENDED Disclaimer: It seems my commentary on “Greed Is Ruining Pride” has upset a few people. First of all, the intentions of my commentary, were to bring to light Prides and other “similar events” with their organizers, have seemed to change the fabric of what “Pride” is and defined as. Greed or this “packin’ them in at all costs” mentality is destroying, what so many have worked so hard for; unity, empowerment, self-expression, and fellowship- a chance to be with others just like me. I wanted to state that the opinions expressed in this article are SOLELY MY OWN, and not the views of AndresFlava or Mr. Andre Allen, himself. AndresFlava gives me full range to state whatever opinions I have on my mind WITHOUT edit or preview. The drawback to this is that my comments sometimes may come off as harsh and condescending. I do apologize for that. But you have a choice…ignore me …discredit what I say…or just tune me out. But given the fact many of you tune in to AndresFlava every day and have added myself to your Twitter family, you have decided to TUNE IN and listen even harder. Thank you! The mere fact that my opinion has caused a ripple in the gay world gives rise that my statements have some merit and validity. If my commentary has gotten people thinking and talking…this is GREAT. New ideas, new ways of thinking, always gives rise to the change in the status quo (ie. Barack Obama). For the past few days my commentary was in no way, form ,or fashion, a gripe session about any particular event or Pride. But an overview of things I have saw and noticed, last year and this year, regarding our community and I don’t like it. I am not going to sit back and bit my tongue, just for the sake of saving face. This commentary was completed in it’s entirety last Sunday (except for few lines towards the end), but due to the length, I decided to publish it, in installments. Here is my last and final installment of the commentary “Greed Is Ruining Pride”. Again, these opinions are solely mine, and not that of AndresFlava or my good friend, Andre Allen, who we all admire and respect.

Finally, we have Sizzle to lead the charge this year and keep this age of Greed moving forward in 2009. If you are on Sizzle mailing list…you received an email on April 1, 2009 at approprixmately 9:25am (at least that is when this email hit my inbox) that stated the following, “This is your official warning. The men and women are coming to Sizzle Miami in Huge numbers....If you've been stressed at the job or at home, just got laid-off or stress about getting laid-off, Sizzle is your perfect outlet…” When I say this I was instantly sick to my stomach and disgusted. What would drive someone to write, come to my “quality event” even if you have been laid-off from your job? Has Sizzle been paying attention to the news; unemployment at 8.5% and climbing, job fairs with thousands of people buying for a few dozen openings, middle-class folks struggling to make ends meet, unemployment to hit 10% before the end of the year. What is purpose of saying, come to Sizzle even if you just were just laid-off? It’s insensitive and crazy as hell to put that in black and white and PRESS SEND. The person who would do that, does not have the best interest of the person who lost their job or our community in mind! What was reasoning behind this? Just to make a few dolllars; considering the huge expense of attending Sizzle? What would drive someone to say that, where all the host hotels are $150 plus per night, covers charges for the night events range from $25 to upwards of $40 a pop (without a VIP card) and a very limited number of FREE events. I know alot of people missed this little email that Sizzle organizers sent but I did not. GREED WILL ALWAYS RUIN PRIDE.

Alot of my friends have asked me what do you have against Sizzle. I really don’t have anything against Sizzle personally. I have attended at least one event of Sizzle since the inception a few short years ago. But, I have attended Sizzle less and less in the past couple of years because I have come to dislike what Sizzle has become. Sizzle has driven many people away from Miami during Memorial Day weekend. About two or three weeks ago I did one of my weekends getaways to New York City and the Bronx. When the weather gets warmer I tend to go there more often. The last night, I was in NYC, I visited one of my favorite spots, Chi-Chi’s in the Village on Christopher St. I met up with some old friends and I met some new ones there too. And it just happen someone asked me,” Do you attend that Sizzle event?” and I replied, “I attend maybe one or two events, that’s it. Why are you guys coming down?”. And when I asked that , you should have the seen the look of disgust I got. They all replied, as in a chorus, “NO!”. You know I was floored and asked why. There were various replies, “over-rated”, “entirely too expensive”, “it’s only for the muscle boys who want to show-off”, “it’s for the younger crowd”, and the list goes on and on. I spent the next 30 mins explaining to these guys that Sizzle is just a small part of what Miami is about during Memorial Day weekend. I actually defended Sizzle on many points that I could; the others were right on point and I had no rebuttal. When I went to Noctural last year as part of Sizzle and spent $14 on a long island ice tea, and $20/25 dollar at the door. I knew at that point, I would never truly enjoy Sizzle again. I felt like I was being taken advantage of, on many of the nights with over-the-top cover charges and outrageous drink prices. But my main point to them at Chi-chi’s is that there is a lot of OTHER things happening during Memorial Day weekend, too. Sizzle had become something terribly out of touch with what Pride is about and with my city. I could care less if Sizzle doesn’t consider itself a “PRIDE”. Line-up a set of pictures from various events Pride and those who don’t officially call themselves a Pride and you won’t be able to tell the difference. And what I hated most about that conversation with those guys in Chi-Chi’s. is that they based their opinion of Miami was based solely off this one event, Sizzle.

There is a glimmer at the light of the end of the tunnel. Greed always breeds competition and behavior changes. Daryl Wilson will see it next weekend, when all the new promoters and events take center stage and moves his events to the sideline. And I predict the same thing will happen in Miami, when Sizzle begins to lose its flame. Sizzle is what is hot now, this year might be different though. I seriously doubt we will have the same crowds, like last year with the economy the way it is. Just to give you a heads up, Miami tourism numbers has decreased every month this year. It’s going to take a WHOLE lot of black boys here to make a dent in that statistic. But back to the topic at hand…Like the latest Sizzle email blast stated “Sizzle is not for all” (well, who is this event for then, I am confused?) but if something comes along that welcomes EVERYONE…. at that point other promoters will seize on the opportunity to offer something new and less expensive and more inclusive, something more like PRIDE used to be. And there will be a new fish in town, just like what is happening this year in D.C. It is already starting to happen based on my group conversation in Chi-chi’s. My conversations with my friends across the country, have not been much different. Many have opted to stay home or head to D.C.; which is another negative impact of greed, it keeps the ones we love in our community, apart.

I just hope that 2009 will not end like it did with 2008, with our gay community rocked by scandal and many of us left wandering what happened. Don’t left greed define our Prides. Be safe and have a great Summer Pride season. See you in Miami for Memorial Day, NYC for Pride in June, and Atlanta for Labor Day. Love you all!

GAY MARRIAGE IS COMING TO NEW HAMPSHIRE

New England is about to add its fifth gay-marriage-granting state.

New Hampshire has lagged behind Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine in allowing same-sex marriage, and that's surprising. After all, the Granite State has a big thing about individual liberties ... for instance, its license plates encourage you to die if you can't "live free."

But now, it appears that the pro-marriage Legislature has struck a deal to narrow the law, on the request of Democratic Governor John Lynch - who was formerly opposed to the legislation, saying that civil unions were sufficiently fabulous for New Hampshire's gay citizens.

"New Hampshire's great tradition has always been to come down on the side of individual liberties and protections," Mr. Lynch, a Democrat, said in a statement. "But following that tradition means we must act to protect both the liberty of same-sex couples and religious liberty."

In its current form, the bill exempts clergy members from having to perform same-sex weddings.

The amendment proposed by Mr. Lynch goes further, exempting any "religious organization, association, or society," as well as individuals or nonprofit groups working with or for such an organization, from having to participate.

Legislative leaders have said they will add the amendment, so that Lynch can sign the bill within a few days.

Disclaimer: I wanted to state that the opinions expressed in this article are solely mine, and are not specifically the views of AndresFlava or Mr. Andre Allen, himself.

This greedy mentality does not only exist with Black Pride events but with General Prides as well. For example, the White Party in Miami is one of the biggest general prides and fundraisers in the country, and yes, it has had its share of controversy, too (http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gaysouthflorida/2009/01/gay-activists-angry-with-popular-dj-rauhofer.html). In-fighting among the White party organizers and promoters all started because highly touted DJ Peter Rauhofer wanted to make the financial part of the Winter party, more transparent, after experiencing unpaid fees, and bounced checks from event organizers. Rauhofer wanted to make sure the community knew where the money was going, which is to support HIV/AIDS social services in South Florida. Two-thirds of the net profits from the Winter Party are supposed to go to this cause. However, the organizers refused to open the “books”. So instead of continuing to play at the events, he started his own party, the same night as the main White Party event, and boy…the kids were UP-SET. They went as far at to start a website to boycott his event. Needless to say, it was pointless. They split the party crowd evenly.

Rauhofer was definitely trying to do the right thing. What were Winter Party organizers hiding? Was the money going to the “good cause”? Considering tickets to the events are usually $100 plus, and hundreds attended these nightly events; what’s up with the unpaid fees, bounced checks, and terrible in-fighting around financial irregularities. With all the energy spent on destroying the reputation of the other; couldn’t that same energy been spent on the true fundraising objective of the White Party? GREED IS RUINING PRIDE.

the Vault Miami Reopens- Just in time for Memorial Day...

This is one of those announcements I am very excited to send out to the masses. One of my favorite clubs in Miami is scheduled to reopen May 16 after a short hiatus. Vault Miami, which is located in the heart of Downtown Miami, will be sure to be a hit with Memorial Day crowds. Vault Miami was temporarlity closed due to some problems with the City of Miami. However those issues has since been resolved. I received confirmation from one of the owners a few days ago, that the Vault will reopen and he stated that the Vault will be better than ever with some new exciting changes to be revealed soon. I can't wait! Check out the website, www.thevaultmiami.com for updates and Memorial Day events. This spot will defintiely be on my alternatives list to be released in a few days. A great place to party, a great place to vibe. The best thing is, it's minutes from my home in downtown Miami. See you at the Vault!

Club Boi Opens New Lounge- the Lyme Lounge

Club Boi opens an additional area to its club located at NW 79th St and 7th ave in Miami. The club now has two levels; it's loft level with two bars, dance floor, stage and NOW it's NEW Lyme Lounge. This is great and a much needed space, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. If you have ever been to Boi, you know it can get packed. But with the addition of the Lyme Lounge this means more room to party and hang out. The Lyme Lounge is complete with several sitting areas, full bar, and its own DJ. The Lyme Lounge is located on the ground level of Club Boi, so be sure to check it out during Memorial Day weekend or your next visit to Miami. For more information on Club Boi, check out their website, www.clubboi.com.

Disclaimer: I wanted to state that the opinions expressed in this article are solely mine, and not the views of AndresFlava or Mr. Andre Allen, himself.

When money is involved and greed starts to take over, Gay Pride will suffer. Even to the point where an entire black gay event is cancelled, the organizers investigated, and all the rest of us left shaking our heads. We all remember NYC Black Pride last year and its cancellation, amidst alleged financial improprieties, state and federal investigations, and, criminal investigations (http://rodonline.typepad.com/rodonline/2008/07/).
I guess most of us were left stunned, especially with the cancellation of the much anticipated park event in Brooklyn. But, in the back of our heads we knew what to expect with gay promoters especially during Pride. This notion of making as much money as you can, treating your patrons any-kind-of-way, and thinking they will always come back seems to resinate throughout Pride events and the promoters who run them. Is this idea of "let's pack 'em in" the original concept of Pride? Has the message been lost? What ever happen to unity, GLBT rights, empowerment, respect, HIV/AIDS awareness, common interests, and common goals. I think the message has been lost among all the overpriced clubs, "I'm better than you" attitudes, and among the alleged fraud, misconduct, and unethical behavior. GREED IS RUINING PRIDE.

Greed is Ruining Pride to continue tommorrow....Check it out!

Packing for Miami? Top Five Things You Need to Survive a Weekend in Miami

1. Tanktops, short sleeves and, shorts, RULE the day and night in Miami. Leave the furs, loose knit scarves, leather, and pleather at home. You will not only be left burning up and sweating, but everyone will be thinking “What made him wear that?!!? It’s the tropics! Average temperature NOW in Miami 84 degrees F and VERY HUMID, with an occasional shower almost everyday.

2. Bring lots of hygiene products and a couple of sweat rags. It’s not uncommon to break a sweat walking from the car to the hotel lobby. And the sweat rags will also come in handy in the club while you dance the night away. You also want to make sure you are smelling extra good as you search for Mr. Right.

3. Bring MONEY and lots of it. Miami is expensive! According to a recent published report posted on Yahoo.com, Miami is ranked number 3 in the nation, as one of the most expensive cities to live. You will realize it when hit Mickey D’s for that afternoon snack. The Sizzle events are sure to put you bank account on life-support. You might only be here for a short few days, but your bank statement will make it seem you were here for a month.

4. No Sizzle VIP Card? No problem, but get ready to break the bank. Here is an alternative, if you are on a budget. Ask around about other party spots. If you didn’t buy a Sizzle VIP card for the nightclubs, you are basically screwed, if you plan to party every night at the Sizzle nightly events. The cover charge at the door ranges from $25 thru $40, depending on the night and the club. The VIP cards only covers the door and drinks are not included. Drinks in the clubs are very expensive. Last year, I paid $14 for a long island ice tea in Noctural. My advice to you, have a few cocktails before you hit the club or check out some of the local spots; Club Boi, Vault Miami, and Twist(FREE). They will be more reasonably priced, and guaranteed to be packed with hot boys as well. You will see the same boyz at each nightly Sizzle event. The only difference will be the club. You won't miss a beat, if you decide to go local a couple of nights! It will be good to have a change of pace, plus your wallet will thank you for it.

5. Follow AndresFlava site and myself on Twitter for the latest and greatest on the haps in Miami. We will keep you on top on what is hot and what is a flop. I'm from Miami, B!&%# !!!!

Greed Is Ruining PRIDE- Multi-Post Commentary about the Bad Side of Pride

From the Desk of King in Miami
Follow me on Twitter During Memorial Weekend for the Latest Hot Spots and Things to Do- www.twitter.com/shortfuseguy

Before I get started I wanted to state that the opinions expressed in this article are solely mine, and not the views of AndresFlava or Mr. Andre Allen, himself.

My peers and associates have hard-pressed me to comment on this particular subject after a disastrous Summer Pride season last year. After a lot of persuasion I decided to go ahead and take on the subject of how greed is ruining pride. And I not talking about Sizzle exclusively, however it is not excluded from this conversation, but other Prides as well, Black and non-Black alike. I will be posting my thoughts on the subject each day for the next few days. I will also include events, clubs, parties, and a Memorial Day Guide to Miami along side my thoughts, so keep up. I am going to give it to you fast and ruff and without the fluff. LOL.

Let’s back up a year and recant some of the problems with Pride season 2008. Do we all recall the uproar Daryl Wilson’s DC antics caused, last year during Memorial Day? Let me get you up to speed if you missed it (http://queerkidofcolor.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/darryl-stephens-is-madagain-dc-pride/) Long story short, Daryl Wilson scheduled Noah’s Arc’s Darryl Stephens to appear at one of his highly promoted and over-priced Pride events. Needless to say, Mr. Wilson either cancelled or never confirmed (the story is very sketchy depending on who is telling it) with Darryl Stephens. So, at the end of the day there were a lot of people upset including Darryl Stephens, expecting to see a celebrity and not getting what they paid for. But according to my DC sources this is not the first time Daryl Wilson has been accused of some shisty stuff. With all these P.R. disasters, Daryl Wilson has paid with his reputation being tarnished, and this years’ events being lackluster. If you have only been paying attention to what has been happening in Sizzleland, you may have missed that there is another Memorial Day event happening in Washington, D.C. And my predication is that Daryl Wilson will have problems next weekend with other promoters (Omega party, K&C Productions, Inferno Party, etc); all moving in on his home turf. All have events planned for Memorial Weekend, which will definitely disperse the party crowd. Daryl Wilson is no longer the only game and worthwhile party. When you treat people any kind of way, guess what, there will EVENTUALLY be another game in town. People will get tired of the crap and look for other places to party and spend their money. We will see how D.C.’s Memorial Day weekend festivities turn out. I know my boi from Connecticut will keep us posted.

Look out for the part 2 of this article tommorrow…
