A Novice in a Crayon Box

a Keith Barbee piece

Tyler Perry's film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's choreopoem For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf is HEAVY.  Really heavy.  Mr. Perry challenges an astute group of women to delve into the depths of darkness and highlight social ills including rape, HIV, and abortion.  Lighter fare includes foolish love and promiscuity, if such things can be considered light.  The ladies tackle those issues with an agility reserved for Wonder Woman but bequeathed upon women the world over.

Unlike Ms. Shange's play in which the women were represented by color, here Mr. Perry bestows names upon them. Janet Jackson's red comes alive in her dress, her shoe bottoms, and roses. I would have liked to see more of that color inclusion with the other characters. Perhaps a yellow carnation in Anika Noni Rose's hair, an orange cocktail ring on the slim fingers of Thandie Newton's sex-crazed Tangie, or Tessa Thompson's youthful Nyla with a purple streak in her curly locs. Many argue that Perry's interjection of Shange's poems within the film are awkward and amiss.  Clearly translating poetry to film is a difficult feat. I'm not upset with Perry's attempt.

Mr. Perry is still a work in progress.  In more capable hands, For Colored Girls would be worthy of the premature Oscar buzz that it is garnering.  To be clear, Mr. Perry has crafted his best movie to date.  Oscar-worthy, it is not.  A pivotal scene involving Kimberly Elise, Michael Ealy, and their children magnifies how much Perry has to learn; especially where restraint is involved.  Elise is brilliant as a keep-your-head-above-water mom and assistant.  Ealy is also deft in his portrayal of Elise's childhood sweetheart, a veteran affected by the tragedies of war with no homecoming welcome.  One doesn't need to see what ultimately happens in order to know it was about to happen.  Therein, the microscope focuses on Perry's novice direction.

The film has a Crash-ish aesthetic that doesn't quite resonate in the same manner. The characters are essentially in the same neighborhood, moving about and touching up against each other's lives without actually intermingling. But at the point that their lives collide, the "crash" comes across anti-climatic and forced. Novice writing is illuminated here.

Phylicia Rashad is the gauge by which all the other performances can be judged.  Rashad is brilliant as the nosey neighbor cum voice of reason.  In a latter scene with Elise, Rashad triumphantly challenges Elise's character to take responsibility. In that moment, Rashad's character turns a corner. She morphs from busy body to matriarch of the film.

Macy Gray, akin to her performances in Lackawanna Blues and Shadowboxer, absolutely shines
in her minuscule but memorable role. Janet Jackson is good here because not much is required of her. Her icy editrix takes its cues from Meryl Streep's in The Devil Wears Prada. Ms. Jackson, however, is no Meryl Streep. Loretta Devine pulls from her sassy seductress of Waiting to Exhale for lovelorn Juanita.

To Perry's credit, he assembled a powerhouse of African American actresses who brought their A game.  Unfortunately, these masters of their craft were left to breathe life into the work of a budding novice.

Character descriptions:
Justus Wright is the typical boy next door. He’s never been in trouble. Justus has had a few major loves in his life but has never really experienced the heart ache or heart break of the real world. Justus begins the series at the end of the book. During his flashbacks we see how he’s gone from an innocent boy in the world to the heartless, almost uncaring creature during the opening. In appearance Justus has shoulder length locks and very beautiful face. His build is a swimmers build. He looks like the innocent school boy type. Justus is 25 years of age and is trying to make in the world as an openly gay man. He works for a credit agency. Justus is the type of guy that sits in the corner at a party, but when you see him your eye immediately goes in his direction, unless he’s with his friends then he dances all night.

Stephen “Steph” Graham rivals the character Omar from the wire, in attitude. He looks to be almost the exact twin of Aries Spears with the attitude of Nino Brown. Growing up on the mean streets of Newark, New Jersey Steph had to develop a thick skin. Steph grew up in an area where being called gay was cause for a beat down. So, he figured he had to be bigger and badder than the baddest man on the block. Steph has an “I don’t give a fuck about anyone or anything, unless I do” attitude. The problem is when Steph does care about you he believes it should be till death or the police do us part. In the past Steph explosive attitude has caused ex lovers to bring about a restraining order. An Abusive lover, Steph rocks a bald head and has a body that looks like he hasn’t been in the gym in some time, but the definition of his arms is still there. Steph is twenty‐seven. Steph is hell bent on moving his way up Mega Corp and is willing to do whatever it takes to get to the top. Knowing that Mega Corp is a family driven organization he knows he has to find and keep a family if he has any hope of one day being the Hood.

Komari Greene puts you in the mind of Prince a little. He’s a brown skinned brother with a short haircut, almost a Julius Caesar. He has a calm and soothing presence whenever he’s in the room. Before Komari became the second head of Mega Corp he was Justus. He was the innocent boy next door trying to find love in all the wrong places. Unlike Justus, Komari has never been the type to sit quietly in a corner. Komari also has a slender frame. When he opens his mouth to speak it’s with a slight southern drawl like he’s lived in Georgia most of his life. Komari has changed since his beginnings at Mega Corp. Now, the lover of the Hood, Komari has almost become like the woman he hates. Seduced into the drug cartel by his love for Masai, Komari will do whatever is necessary to protect his family, but always manages to keep his hands clean.
Masai Greene is a reformed psycho bad boy, turned sincere love by the love of Komari. Masai has jet black locks that rest on his shoulder blades, a well built streetwise business man who only speaks when he needs to take control. He likes to sit in the background and watch things develop. He has a scar that goes from the corner of his mouth up to his ear and a tattoo of barbed wire on his right bicep. He’s the cool brother with a short fuse. Masai is the head of the organization. Ever since the death of his son Masai keeps the things he loves so close to him, so‐much‐so that sometimes he comes across as smothering. Don’t mistake his quiet nature for a sign of weakness.
Malik Charles is Justus’ current love. Malik and Justus had been friends as children until Malik’s parents moved away. Malik is another locked brother with an innocent face. He’s loved Justus since they were in elementary school and has never wanted anything but to see him safe. His body type is in between Justus and Masai’s, it’s a nice build but not overly done. He’s lived in Virginia for 9yrs so its southern accent is definitely pronounced. Malik is the ultimate good‐guy. He always does what is right and wants to make sure everyone else does as well, hence the dilemma for him being in a drug cartel. Malik wants to get Justus the redemption and escape that he needs but doesn’t want to be controlling enough to tell him what to do.
Rafael Vega‐ a villain and a streetwise Dominican kid with a sharp tongue and the knife skills to back it up. He’s about 5’9 but acts like he’s taller. Rafael wants Steph to himself and will stop at nothing to make sure he gets him.
Blaq‐ A rasta clad Jamaican with a bad attitude and an “I don’t care attitude.” He’s not afraid to die. He’s a sexier version of Shabba Ranks and whenever he steps into the room he strikes fear in the heart of anyone around him. Rafael is the ultimate con‐artist and manipulator. He wants to come between Steph and Justus because he feels like he would make Steph happier than he’s ever been.
Jennifer Love‐ Komari’s coke addicted best friend in the world. They’ve been friends since before Komari and Masai met. Jennifer is a drag performer in New York City in the process of getting breasts. She speaks her mind while puffing on a NewPorte. She’s a dark brown cutie who a biting criticism for every occasion that she masks as a joke. Underneath it all there is a little bit of Jealousy that Jennifer has for Komari because Komari got the big man while Jennifer go Jo‐Jo.

Jo‐Jo Daniels‐ A streetwise hustler trying to come up in the business. At 5’5 Jo‐Jo commands respect from all of those around him, even is his drag girlfriend Jennifer. Jo‐Jo worships the ground that Jennifer walks her Stilhetto Minolo Bloniks on and will do anything to make sure she’s safe, even hide her $1,000, a day coke habit.

For Colored Folks Who May Consider Boycotting Bad Films In The Future by darnell lamont walker

For Colored Folks Who May Consider Boycotting Bad Films In The Future
by Darnell Lamont Walker

"I loved you on purpose," cried the lady in blue.
i hated you the same way, is what I wanted to yell at the screen for this sketchy rendition of a masterpiece.
forgive this review for it's randomness, but i took notes in the dark on purple paper with black ink, so I can barely make some of it out myself.

there's a reason i've been hoping for the death of this film long before it came out. actually several, but let's start with number one:

i am an artist. it took a while for me to accept that, but that's what i am. and being an artist, i know art. FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF is art. it was art when i read it in 1995, and it was art again when Teresa Dowell-Vest, one of the greatest writers and directors i know, directed the stage play in 1998. being unfortunate enough to have witnessed the many catastrophes Perry has put on screen, i didn't want this to end up in the same file cabinet.

number two:

For Colored Girls is a show about women, for women. it's about women loving women, and women loving self. "how can can misogynist, self-loathing, irresponsible filmmaker bring across the views of a womanist," i asked myself, assuming Ntozake Shange is a womanist. and what would his usual target audience (middle aged, african american women who never learned about the construction of false identities, communities, and life imitating art) think of this? "they'll love it, i know"was my answer.

What's hard for me is finding a good starting point, and how to enter this with you all. should i assume that most people have seen the stage play? or at least read it? No, I know my target audience, so i'll just start from scratch:

thin lines didn't exist in this film. the line drawn between Shange's words and Perry's cliche'd phrases and jokes could withstand a New York City subway system. when the poems/monolongues (shange's words) ended, there was an immediate shift. had the brilliant, beautiful woman sitting next to me not noticed the same thing, i'd think i was crazy. i am not crazy. we, as an entire audience, attached ourselves to Shange's words hoping they'd never end, but when they did, we sat back in our seats, slumped and frustrated at the simpleness and surface level attempts at poetry. made by the new writer.

speaking of surface level, who in the hell were these characters? thank god for the magnificent talent that made up this near-perfect cast, but they should all feel cheated. i had no allegiance to any of them. i felt nothing. i knew not where they came from nor where they were going. they could have worn sunshades throughout the whole film, and a difference would not have been made. soul-less "ghouls" created by the director, who seems to be making poor character development his signature, like Spike Lee made the stroll his.

Kimberly Elise has always been among my top five list of favorite actresses, and after seeing this film, you will know why. i can't say for sure, but I am sure the greatness of actors such as Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose and the woman who will one day be my wife (in this life or the next) Phylicia Rashad guaranteed a quality we may not have gotten had Beyonce accepted and Mariah Carey stayed. Tessa Thompson was outstanding and Janet was a brilliant surprise, making this role one of her best portrayals of an actress, although she was merely playing the "colored" version of Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly.

While trying to figure out how and why an untreated STD worked it's way into the film, and was never mentioned again, i counted: 1 Rape, 2 STD's, 1 Black man on the "downlow", and a partridge in a pear tree. and as much as i tried not writing this into the review, i have to: when can we have a "colored" film without the cliched downlow brother creating paranoia? while this issue does exist, i'd for once like to go to the theater to see a "colored" film without it. related: these bad black men, who failed to appear as anything other than a mention in the stage play, came to life as the the accomplices of these main women who apparently wanted to bring pain on themselves. [you have to take some of the responsibility. how much is up to you] is what, or close to what, Gilda (Rashad) told Crystal/Lady in Brown(Elise).

and the one solid brother in the film, Donald, played by Hill Harper, was in the clear with me until his wife's breakdown. she had guilt on her heart because she failed to do her job which would have prevented an ungodly tragedy. he woke up, saw her crying, and let her know that his love for her would heal her, and not to worry any longer. where would you women be without a man created by Perry? LOST!

For my own pleasure, i'd love for you all to take a look at the clearly fake tattoo work given to Beau WIllie, played by Michael Ealy, and Rose, the back alley abortionist, played by Macy Gray.

aside from maybe one too many aerial shots and the light meant for a milk-skinned white woman placed on Khalil Kain's (who played Bill) face, I give the production crew a standing ovation. out of 10, i give this film a 5.5 because Ntozake Shange's half was damn near perfect. and the .5 comes for tyler's attempts at beefing promotion while failing to mention his own RAINBOW on oprah not too long ago.

Thank You,

WE THE PEOPLE...HAVE SPOKEN LOUD AND CLEAR----Midterm Elections 2010

Example

Guest post by Anthony Lorenzo

Crazy election night. I'm not gonna front, I was pulling for my girl Linda McMahon in CT. I do not support candidates, whether you're a democrat or a republican, who straight lie about their military service. Too many of our great men and women put their lives on the line for the freedoms we enjoy today. So, with that said, Dick Blumenthal (D) and Mark Kirk (R) may now proceed to serve their first terms in shame.

The 2010 midterm elections was not about democrat vs. republican...or witches, George Bush, aqua buddhas and latinos that look asian. It's about the hurt many are feeling in our country every day. This recession has been very painful, especially for those who never went through one before, too young to remember the recessions of the 80s. I'm sorry to inform you but Healthcare and Wall Street Bailouts did not pay the bills and put food on the table this year. Why was so much political capital spent by President Obama on Healthcare when that was not on people's minds? Why was the Wall Street Bailouts so important when it completely went against the fabric of our capitalist nation?

I have unshakeable faith that the President spent every waking night focusing on jobs. The only problem was is majority of Americans did not see that. Healthcare and bailouts is what they saw. A lot of focus on the middle east process is what they saw. A great speech in Cairo and a president still somewhat in campaign mode is what they saw. If you truly want Americans to support and know that you're fighting for them, you must put it in their face and say it with your chest. Assumptions is not a term that's easily acknowledged.

Respect the people's right to be heard (including the tea-party) and feel their pain like my man Bill Clinton used to do. And big props to Bill Clinton for putting party politics aside and showing democrats how it should be done. He stood by Kendrick Meek's side to the bitter end even though we all knew that he couldn't overcome the fascination many in Florida have with Marco Rubio who will definitely be a big star in the GOP.

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATL...

Good Morning Heat seekers did you watch Housewives of ATL? Well this was another so so episode but as usual they didn't disappoint.. NeNe got her bandages and stitches out from her surgury everything looks good not too much and she feels good. Sheree and this man that she has been seeing I don't know yall he seemed pretty good at first but now he is borderline gross. Kandi had Kim on her late night sex show and Kim learned a new phrase beef curtains lol. Kim's face was priceless. I won't go there with Phadrea's and pickle's cuz yall let her have it on facebook and I agree. Cynthia who I am starting to like through a mother's day dinner and invited all the ladies this is where things got good. Phadrea of course said about Cynthia's neighborhood how she live in an area where they turn the hood into a nicer area (Now what's wrong with that) Phadrea showed that she is truely a waste of film on this show. She has been on the defensive side since the show aired 4 weeks ago saying that the power of editing is making her look so bad (No Bitch ,it's you) then Apolo comes to the dinner with a gift for Phadrea (Gucci Baby Bag) that was tacky to do that at that dinner he should have waited till she got home, but I am sure Phadrea put him up to that. Apolo doesn't seem to have an original thought in his head. Peter (cynthia's boyfriend) brought up NeNe's situation with Greg based on sex we then got to see a softer side to Her which is nice.. So it looks like things are grown up in ATL for now of course.WELL THIS HAS BEEN BRAZIL WITH MY 2 CENTS HOLA ...
