Day 2 of the DNC: Renewing America’s Promise, Hillary Clinton Knocks It Out of the Park

From the Desk of King D in Miami

Many are dubbing Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention the most important day of the week long convention because of one women, Hillary Rodham Clinton. As many of you know, Hillary came in second place in the Spring Democratic primary race, but was not chosen by Barack Obama as the VP. With 18 million people casting their vote for Hillary instead of Obama, the Democratic party is at a divisive crossroads. Many of Clinton’s supporters are still bitter about the lose and Hillary not being chosen at the VP which has caused a rift in the party. A divided Democratic party will not help Obama get into the Oval office. So as Tuesday’s keynote speaker, Hillary Clinton’s job was to help the Obama campaign smooth out this rift and urge her supporters to vote for Barack Obama in the November. Bill Clinton is also scheduled to speak on Wednesday to help bring home the message of party unity and to help rally the masses around Presidential nominee Barack Obama and VP-nominee Joe Biden. Brandy talks about upcoming "Human" Album

Here is the link for the new song "Right Here"(Departed)

Below is the press release talking about Brandy's new album "Human" which will come out on Tuesday November 11, 2008.

NEW YORK, Aug 15, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Epic Records proudly announces the release of "Human," the new full-length studio album from the multi-platinum-selling Grammy-winning R&B/pop music superstar Brandy, available online and in stores on Tuesday, November 11.

Brandy's Epic Records debut and first new album since 2004's Grammy-nominated RIAA gold-certified "Afrodisiac," "Human" is a bold new collection of songs reflecting the artist's evolution as a musician and an individual.

"'Human' is my most personal album to date," said Brandy. I have grown so much since my last album. Being able to express myself and my journey through my music is a feeling I can't describe. With this new chapter of my life it feels good to have Rodney, a familiar face, by my side again. He brings out emotions in me like nobody else."

Reunited with executive producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, who first collaborated with Brandy on her 1998 multi-platinum-selling collection "Never Say Never," Brandy has created the most emotionally resonant album of her career with songs and performances reflecting the truth and complexity of her experiences.

"It feels good to be back in the lab with Brandy again," said Rodney Jerkins. "We've always made great records and I'm humbled and honored to be continuing our legacy. The sound might be new, bigger, and more uplifting but we've kept our musical promise by making great songs and great music once again. There is no musical combination like ours!!!"

The album's title is a real life mirror of Brandy as a woman, an artist, a musician and a performer, communicating what it means to be fully "Human": strong yet vulnerable, candid and triumphant, in love with life and in touch with the things of the spirit.

"Right Here (Departed)," the first single from "Human," will impact Pop radio on September 16. The single and ringtone are scheduled to be released on August 26, with a digital pre-order for the album slated the same day.

Other key tracks on "Human" include "Fall," which Brandy co-wrote with the chart-topping British dance/pop singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield, as well as the new songs "Long Distance," "Piano Man," and "Torn Down." Brandy's other musical collaborators on Human include Brian Kennedy (Rihanna/"Disturbia"), emerging production whiz RedOne (Kat DeLuna, 2006 World Cup Official Single "Hips Don't Lie" with Shakira & Wyclef Jean), and James Fauntleroy (Jordin Sparks/"No Air").

(CocoDorm At It Again!) vs City of Miami

From the Desk of King D in Miami.

-Article courtesy of Miami Herald.

A stroll down Northeast 27th Street doesn't feel X-rated, but it's here -- along a quiet, bayfront residential street -- that Miami has declared war against Internet porn.

For about a year, Miami city leaders have tried to evict ''Khali Kreme,'' ''Sincere Luv'' and the other ''dorm dudes'' of, a gay porn site that films out of a red-brick colonial-style house. From the outside, nothing about the home's appearance suggests it's different from its neighbors.
But inside, multiple webcams capture occupants' almost every move -- from household chores to regularly scheduled sexual encounters. Miami's Code Enforcement Board last year declared the home an adult business, one operating illegally in a residential area. The city ordered it shut down. Cocodorm responded by suing in federal court, alleging Miami violated the website's First Amendment rights. One expert says it's a lawsuit Cocodorm has a shot at winning, as case law is on the website's side.

Cocodorm argues its Edgewater home can't be called an adult business because, unlike a run-of-the-mill strip club, the public is not invited in. Those who want to see Cocodorm's ''hottest and horniest'' do so via the Internet, with a credit card.
Avoiding the adult-business label is key, because Miami's zoning code limits such establishments to industrial areas and requires they obtain city approval. Should the courts agree with Miami, the operation would likely be closed.

''What they are doing is not good for the neighborhood,'' laments Miami Code Enforcement Director Mariano Loret de Mola.
That conclusion is far from certain, and U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Cooke recently rejected a city effort to dismiss Cocodorm's suit.
Cocodorm's legal position rests on a 2001 federal appeals-court case involving, a similar website operating in Tampa.
Like Miami, Tampa tried to use its adult-business zoning laws to shut down a webcam-filled house, in this case occupied by women.
But the appeals court, ruling in the website's favor, found that Voyeurdorm's customers weren't gathering at the Tampa home -- or anywhere else in Tampa.
''As a practical matter, zoning restrictions are indelibly anchored in particular geographic locations,'' the court wrote. With Voyeurdorm, the court added, 'the public offering occurs over the Internet in `virtual space.' ''

Last year, Miami's legal staff persuaded the city's Code Enforcement Board to classify Cocodorm as an adult business -- despite the Tampa decision. Assistant City Attorney Victoria Méndez told the board that wording differences between the Miami and Tampa laws meant the situations weren't identical, and Miami's law was stronger.

Evans Anyanwu, a New Jersey Internet attorney who followed the Voyeurdorm case, isn't convinced. Anyanwu reviewed both Miami and Tampa's laws after speaking with a reporter.
''To me, it's the same exact case,'' he said. ``The city of Miami has an uphill fight.''
Miami's legal team declined to comment, but in court filings the city argues it has a right to determine appropriate locations for an enterprise it describes as ``sex-for-money open to the world.'' A jury trial is set for December, but Cocodorm's attorneys are hoping to settle matters sooner. The website plans to file legal arguments Thursday asking the judge to grant summary judgment in its favor.
Cocodorm offers its young, muscular males $1,200 a month -- along with free room and board -- while requiring they masturbate and have group sex in front of the cameras. Models enjoy complimentary groceries, cable TV and use of an X-Box 360, the website promises. Those over 25 aren't welcome, but education is. ''Models should have some smarts,'' the website says. ``You should AT LEAST have a high school diploma or GED.''

Mail-order DVD sales are handled not from the home, but at a warehouse space on North Miami Avenue -- further proof, Cocodorm said, that there's no ''business'' being run at the house.
Phillip Bleicher -- director of Flava Works, the company behind Cocodorm -- came to the door at that warehouse location but declined to speak with a reporter, referring questions to his attorneys. The models at Cocodorm were also mum. ''I don't do interviews. Sorry, babe,'' said one.
Attorney Jamie Benjamin, who represents Cocodorm, is confident Miami will have trouble proving webcams constitute a business.''There is no adult entertainment there,'' he said. ``Nobody goes to a brick-and-mortar place and buys something. There's no customers there.''
Bleicher has had legal tangles in the past.
In 2006, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan got a judge to freeze the assets of a Bleicher-affiliated Chicago charity, Student Leadership Network. The attorney general accused the charity of scamming more than $3 million from schools across the nation.Instead of financing youth-leadership efforts, the charity allegedly spent its money at a liposuction clinic and a custom wig store and to pay for a trip to Rio de Janeiro. A criminal investigation is ongoing. Benjamin said Bleicher was one of many members on the board, and that the allegations are just that. No charges have been filed, he said, ``because there's nothing that was done that was improper, whatsoever.''

A dorm-style porn website Bleicher ran in Chicago also came under scrutiny. The all-male, black and Latino site -- essentially the same business model as Cocodorm -- was shut down by the Chicago Department of Public Health after the agency uncovered high rates of sexually transmitted diseases among the ``models.'' Benjamin said the health issues have been mischaracterized. 'Everybody that was a prospective employee was tested,'' Benjamin said.
``And yes, some came back positive, but the people who came back positive never worked there.'' Christopher Brown, assistant commissioner at the Chicago health department, tells a different story. ''They were active patients being seen for HIV, and then they could be seen on this website,'' he said. ``So the doctors, I think, were concerned.''

In Miami, the Cocodorm website tells those wishing to live at the house that they must bring health test results with them and that safe sex must be practiced at all times.
Cocodorm's neighbors along Northeast 27th Street voiced mixed opinions about whether the city should shut the house down. Several said as long as Cocodorm's activities stay behind closed doors, it's not a problem, but one complained of dorm residents partying outside the house.

Meanwhile, only steps away from Cocodorm, where the street meets the bay, another dorm -- of a different kind -- is poised to open. It's the Residencia Jesús Maestro, a male Catholic dorm. Acting Director Efrain Zabala said the dorm will house those pursuing the priesthood, but also local college students who have other careers in mind but want to live in a dorm that nurtures faith. Daily personal prayer and annual spiritual exercises are a requirement, and ''female companions'' are off-limits in some parts of the building. ''It offers a more wholesome environment,'' Zabala said. What does Zabala think of his soon-to-be neighbor? ''I'm not at liberty to speak about it,'' the church official said.

Will Atlanta Save Us from a Summer of Disastrous Prides?

From the Desk of Miami Correspondent-King D

Greetings from Miami! I must apologize for my hiatus from the blog. I have been traveling all over the place- Cozumel, Mexico; my 10 year class reunion in the Midwest, and I also covered Miami Beach Bruthaz Weekend in Miami Beach. And finally I am happy to be back home in Downtown Miami and looking forward to my annual trip to Atlanta for Labor Day??? Or am I and “a whole lotta other folks” setting ourselves up to be disappointed by another 2008 Black Gay Pride Gone Wrong.

I guess the verdict is in…in 2008, it seems we took a step back in Prides and the reason we have Black Pride celebrations, due to promoters and organizers losing sight of what Black Pride is all about. It seems we have individuals who are more into furthering their own cause than that of the Black gay community. Or maybe it’s due to global warming, we blame everything on that these days. From the cancellation of Los Angeles Pride, overpriced venues and events for Sizzle Miami, no-show celebrities in D.C, to the recent and embarrassing cancellation of Pride in the City in Brooklyn; where did we go wrong. Sure a lot of the blame falls on particular individuals who feel they can treat the Black gay community any kind of way to make a buck. Some of the blame falls on organizers who have no idea on what Black Pride is really about. But some of this blame falls on US. We continuously support these individuals and their events, a lot of time against our better judgement. After this summer, I am sure this attitude will change. Either we will make conscience effort not to support greedy promoters AND voice our concern either by phone, letter, fax, or email as to why you are not attending their event. Or the recession will. To make travel arrangements and travel half way across the country, to attend a planned Black Pride for it to be Cancelled. I would be pissed to say the least.

So I am hoping that Atlanta Black Pride will not disappoint. It is always very organized at most events, and it seems the promoters have a pretty good handle on things. With so much competition with parties, clubs, and events, they wouldn’t dare charge some outrageous cover. I have attended every Pride in Atlanta for the past 10 years and I have never had a bad time. But 2008 has been full of disappointments. I am a little leery already due to the fact there are still rooms available at the host hotel for the In the Life organization and we are two and half weeks away from Labor Day. It could be the ridiculous high rates due to the name change to the “W”. I don’t know. This hotel usually sells out a couple of months prior to Labor Day. So, we will see. If you do plan to be in Atlanta, definitely check out the opening ceremonies at the host hotel (, a must attend event. I will see you guys there, but I will be up the street at the Westin.

Well ladies and gents, this is your friendly Miami correspondent signing off. More Blogs to come.

Bernie Mac DEAD @ 50

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago. He grew up on the city's South Side, living with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.

Mac worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago's South Side. He began doing standup as a child, and his film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans comedy "Mo' Money" in 1992. In 1996, he appeared in the Spike Lee drama "Get on the Bus."

He was one of "The Original Kings of Comedy" in the 2000 documentary of that title that brought a new generation of black standup comedy stars to a wider audience.

Mac went on to star in the hugely popular "Ocean's Eleven" franchise with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

His turn with Ashton Kutcher in 2005's "Guess Who" topped the box office. It was a comedy remake of the classic Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn drama "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" — with Mac as the black dad who's shocked that his daughter is marrying a white man.

Mac also had starring roles in "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."

In the late 1990s, he had a recurring role in "Moesha," the UPN network comedy starring pop star Brandy.

The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.

I was just reading the newspaper here in DC called the Express in it citizens in Barrow,Alaska they are paying $ 9.89 for a gallon of milk. $4.65 for a gallon of unleaded gas, a loaf of bread is $6.00, A dozen eggs cost $4.60, A pound of strawberries cost $10.00 and finally a 1/2 pound of lunch meat is $7.00 wow and i was complaining about the cost of food here in the DC metro area i am glad i dont live their. However the governor of Alaska is feeling sorry for her resident so she has proposed checks of $1,200.00 for each resident to help relieve some of the burden, using a surplus from the oil-rich state treasury. Lawmakers are debating the proposal. I guess we have good here un-like the people their in Alaska, i dont think New York, Atlanta,Miami,DC and any other major city in the US would be able to handle these prices for the cost of food.

Introducing Bry'Nt

I first heard of Bry'Nt when he performed here in DC at 2008 DC Black Pride and was very intrigued. This young man is very talented and he is among an emerging group of young LGBT rappers coming up in the game and trying to make a name for themselves. His 6 track mixtape can be heard on his Official Myspace page from start to finish each track is hott. So with out further ado i would like to introduce you to Bry'Nt the gay rapper out of New York

What made u start rapping?
The beginning of my interest in rapping comes from a life full of difficult and twisted situations in my teenage years and even in my adult life where I kept a lot to myself. For the majority of the time, my rhymes are a reflection of what's been going on in my head; thoughts, feelings, ideas, and perceptions.

What are some of your successes?
I released my first mixtape as a solo artist entitled "Porn Star" May 27th, 2008, which will have a FREE online release real soon. Since then I've been on a Pride tour performing at Pride events in cities like Washington D.C., Springfield, Detroit, New York City, and a few others and more to come. I also have a song on the soundtrack of the independent film "Finding Me" and a few songs some other mixtapes.

What does the future hold for Bry'Nt?
The future holds many more performances. A new mixtape in the winter and an album next summer. I will also be seen in celebrity photographer, Francois Rousseau's "Les Atelier Project" which is a photography exhibit that I posed artistically nude for (no, you can't see my dick! *LOL*). That will be coming out in February of 2009 at the European House Of Photograpy in Paris, France.

Who did you look up too growing up for inspiration?
The people that inspired me growing up were all of the artists from the late 90's East Coast movement (i.e. Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Junior M.A.F.I.A., Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., etc.).

Is there a rapper out now or the past that people compare you to?
Lil' Kim! *LOL* Kim was one of the people I thought was hot growing up so it's okay. But people love to compare me to her because of the hyper sexual lyrical content.

Who is Bry'Nt when your not rapping? What you like to do?
Bry'Nt is just a cool dude, very humorous! I like to go to the beach, exercise, go to amusement parks, go to concerts, eat sushi, and sleep! I love to sleep! That’s just a few things I like to do.

What is your goal in the hip-hop industry?
My ultimate goal in the hip-hop industry is to be one of the best that ever did it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself still working hard but with a greater following of fans.

Do you have any regrets working in this business?
One think I regret is working with certain individuals (who shall remain nameless) who worked with me in fear of having people know that they helped a "gay rap artist".

Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
I want people to know that my lyrics are all a reflection of a deviant lifestyle that I live but that my heart is still pure and I work hard everyday to be a better person.

The original name for the mixtape was "Rap's Tiger Tyson" and Tiger wasn't having it! *LOL* So I opted to change it to "Porn Star" because I felt my position in music is similar to an adult actor's position in film. As a sexually liberal society, we consume billions of dollars worth of pornographic material every year. Nonetheless, there is a negative stigma attached to those who regularly view pornographic movies. Therefore we watch them in solitude (some of us in groups *LOL*) and with shame and fear of having others know that we do. And I've learned through many observations that there are many people that secretly are fans of mine, however, they only listen to my music in private and with shame and in fear of having others know they enjoy it. Especially members of the straight community. There's the answer for those who've been wondering, I know I've said a lot! I don't knock the hustle of actual porn stars but I've never been one myself nor will I ever be.

Blind Faith the Movie

This amazing film starring Charles Dutton, Courtney Vance, Kadeem Hardison, Lonette Mckee and directed by Ernest Dickerson. Below is part one. See the other parts here. Set in the late 50's, in a time when being gay was a sickness and being black almost a crime, it's one of the most powerful films I've have ever seen -- but with these stars, who would expect any less. Courtney Vance plays a lawyer defending his nephew wrongly accused of murdering a white boy. Charles Dutton plays the boys father who doesn't seem to want to unravel the growing mystery.

As a side note you can only view this movie youtube and the movie isnt for purchase due to Showtime Networks not releasing the movie.
