RIP LENA HORNE June 30, 1917- May 9, 2010)

Lena Horne, Singer and Actress, Dies at 92 on Sunday night at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. She is well known for her voice but we all loved her in the 1978 she played Glinda the Good Witch in “The Wiz,” the film version of the all-black Broadway musical based on “The Wizard of Oz.”

Ms. Lena Horne was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio and who went on to achieve international fame as a singer. When she turned 80 she had this to say “My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”

The last two years I have put together a club and things to do guide for the Memorial Day Weekend/Hip-hop Weekend crowd coming down to Miami. Many of you said it was very helpful and some of the places I suggested were right on. I am working on the list now but am waiting for a couple of events and flyers from various clubs and promoters to post. I will have it published a week before Memorial Day. Boy, boy, boy....the economy is definitely getting better and new business are opening up all the time, and that includes nightclubs. Yes, Miami has another club for you to tingle and mingle. It's the Backstreets Miami, located in the Design District on NE 29th st and N. Miami Ave. I had a chance to visit this club last Sunday after a conversation with the promoter on Twitter. (Everyone needs a Twitter account, a must have in 2010.)

Backstreets Miami is the new fish in town. I believe they have been open three or four weeks, so they are building up their clientele. I didn't have a chance to preview the entire club, however what I say was pretty nice. LONG BAR and sitting area as you walk in. I really couldn't complain. The only thing you have to prepare yourself for is that "New York" smell. What do I mean? In New York, and other older cities, the older buildings they have a particular smell. It's not good, nor bad, it's unique. This building where the club is at, has that same smell. If you ever been to NYC and went to a club or went shopping in an older part of the city, you know exactly what I am talking about. Anyways the bartenders were very nice. My drinks were f****ing awesome. Plus, several of my friends were there, which made it even better. So the word is definitely getting out. You guys know I love to drink. I had a good time and will definitely be back to show my support.

Backstreets Miami is open on Sunday nights from 11pm until 4am. 21+ for entry. Vault is also open that night, so there is a little bit of competition. But check out Backstreets Miami, and tell me what you think.

Wassup Bloga-sphere! I hope everyone is enjoying their spring. Summer is not too far away. It seems here in South Florida we have jumped from a cold winter to a sweltering summer, and forgot about spring. It's unbearably hot already in Miami, so if you are coming down for Memorial Day, be sure to bring your shorts and leave the furs at home.

Me and my good friend had the opportunity to visit Boi 2.0, two weeks ago. I know several people have been asking for the review, so here it is. My overall grade for Boi 2.0 is a C+. And here are my reasons why. As many of you know Club Boi's management had a falling out, splitting the original Club Boi establishment into two locations. Yes, a hot mess! However it seems the old club on NW 79th St/NW7th Ave has now closed their doors or will be closing soon according to a reliable source. The new location Boi 2.0 is now located at NE 79th St/NE 7th Ave. Appears like the address are close, right? Well they are. About a mile or so down the same street, but the clubs couldn't be more different.

Boi 2.0 gives you a upscale type of vibe, which some of the "boys" are not feeling. I asked several of my friends, after I visited the club, "what do you think of Boi 2.0." The common reply is "it's aiight." I think this response comes from the atmosphere of the club. It is not the "hood club" of old, anymore. However some patrons frequented the old establishment for that "hood" type of feel. They wanted it. I know it seems weird, but makes sense. Club Boi has been around for several years and to do a complete 180 degree turn, is kind of shocking. You walk into Boi 2.0 and you would think you were on South Beach. The club is VERY nice. Two rooms, nice outside patio area, 2 bars, 2 dance floors, valet parking and a VIP area. Some of old faces are there, such as Dj Galvin T, and Dias, however there are alot of NEW faces. I think these changes have hurt Boi 2.0 in a way. They are now 21 years old entry only, and its has lost some of it's charm. Alot of the bar employees, I have never seen in my life. And yes, the club is "aiight". I did have nice time, but the feel of the club was different. I think, myself and many others will have to get used to this NEW Boi 2.0

Yes, the old Club Boi location was hood. And Yes, I had my car broken into at the old location, which will be unlikely to happen at the new location. However the Boi of old, is not like the Boi of new. Two different clubs, two different feelings. Almost to the point it seems they might be starting over with the clientele base. They have been SEVERAL patrons complaining about the unusually high cover. At one point, I think there were charging $20. That for me is a HELL-TO-THE-NAWH! But I think management has been taking notice, and it has been FREE cover, with a 2-drink minimum the past couple of weeks, which is more reasonable, especially if you are trying to build back up your business. Drinks were reasonable. And the bartenders do hook you up. The night I went to the club, there was a decent crowd but not like the old Boi. I think it could also be the space is bigger.

My Coming Out Story

Ishared my story with my very good friend tron from http://www.whatsthet.com/ so i thought i would share the story with my readers as well in honor of Mother' Day Weekend.


Wow…well my coming out story is a story of a boy who grew up in the church and took in a lot of the church activities as a youth. As I began to get into finding out who I was and where my life would take me, I came to the realization that indeed I was attracted to the same sex. At first, it was a scary thing that I couldn’t come to grips with. I honestly believe that rejection from girls that I were attracted to, played a crucial factor in this part as well.

I was raised in a Jamaican household were gays were looked down upon and ridiculed
Despite my family’s Jamaican roots, I felt that my decision to come out to them would be fine based on their love and dedication. I was wrong! My grandmother told me i was going to hell and that it was an abomination and started quoting bible scriptures to me. Deep down, I knew it hurt her that her eldest grandchild would not bare her any great grandkids and because of that she lashed out at me.

My aunt would wake me up early every morning for about a month yelling and screaming “FAGGOT” and that she hated me. Although the words of my family have hurt me it has also made me the stronger person I am today.

My mother, even-though she does not approve, has come to grips with my sexuality. I have been estranged from my family for the last 10 years. Recently, the death of my father last month brought me and my mother back a little closer. We have never been a unified family but I have reached out more and hope that eventually time will heal all wounds.
