FAMED Author E.Lynn Harris DEAD at 54

just finding out that E. Lynn Harris Famed author passed yesterday. Truly a sad weekend in the literary world. He will be greatly missed! I first met E.Lynn Harris back in 2006 at Sizzle Miami where he was promoting his lastest book. and in 2009 he returned to Sizzle Miami to promote yet again his latest book Basketball Jones. The man was an amazing author and below is one of his last interviews with 3LWTV's Lonnell Williams of www.lonnellwilliams.blogspot.com

AndresFlava mourns the loss of the great E. Lynn Harris, who passed away today in Los Angeles at the young age of 54. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

E. Lynn Harris took us all by storm in the early 1990's with his first novel "Invisible Life". For many of us, it was our first time reading a book that told the complex story about the lives of black gay men and the difficult choices many of us had to make in dealing with our sexuality and relationships. He forever changed the direction of literary context as we know it today. It is because of individuals like E. Lynn Harris that we have the number of African American LGBT Authors and Publishers that we have today. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for opening the door and paving the way for our gay brothers and sisters to write openly about our lives and experiences as so many that have come behind him have done.

We are once again reminded of how quickly things change around us and the importance of embracing each moment life has to offer as none of us knows how long we have in this world.

Let's take time out of our busy schedules to share with each other more love, concern and support.

Our condolences go out to E. Lynn's family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Final Day Coverage of Miami Beach Bruthaz

The final day of Miami Beach Bruthaz 09 was bitter sweet. I have to be honest, I attended Miami Beach Bruthaz last year and was reluntant to take this assignment. But I love to support our local events and promoters. I had an "okay" time last year and was kind of anxious to see whow things would turn out this year, considering the economy, etc. But I am glad to report MBB did a 180 degree turn in my mind with the event planning, host hotel, club venues, seminars and workshops. Reflecting back on the past 4 days, I am left with a "warm" feeling. Something I haven't felt in a long time. After reporting and also seeing reports of black event planners/promoters taking advantage of our community, it was great to see a LGBT event break that stereotype. Ian and his crew put on a great event with substance and still kept in mind who they were catering to. MBB didnt loose their vision and everyone still has rent money for next week. It was great seeing all the sexy fellas from around the country converge on South Beach for 4 days of fun-in-the-sun. I congratulate Ian, event producer, and his staff on a fine job. The events were very much on point, from Evolve at Score to the MBB and Mundo Fashion Show. Quality events without the over top prices. I didn't hear not one person complain about the cost because everything was reasonable. Other event promoters could learn from Ian and his crew. Again Miami Beach Bruthaz, GREAT JOB!

My last day of Miami Beach Bruthaz would take me to Palace Bar on Ocean Drive for brunch and happy hour. And when I tell you the drag shows had traffic on Ocean Drive come to a gridding halt. The kidz were doing their show in the street at one point. Everyone loved it, the boyz at Palace, and the tourists who happened to be walking by. It was one of the those moments of Miami Beach Bruthaz that we will be talking about for years to come. I am making my reservations now, I will definitely be back for MBB 2010.

Hanna pleads guilty to killing DC's Tony Randolph Hunter gets slap on wrist

Courtesy of Rod 2.0

The teenager implicated in the case of a black gay Maryland man killed in a brutal street attack in Washington, D.C. pleads guilty to a misdemeanor charge and avoids substantial jail time.
Robert Hanna plead guilty to misdemeanor assault on Thursday in the September 2008 death of Tony Randolph Hunter, who was 37. Hunter and a friend were severely beaten as they were headed to the BeBar, the popular gay club. A severe blow to the head left Hunter in a coma and lingering ten days in a vegetative state.

Police arrested Hanna on October 15 for voluntary manslaughter in connection with the attack. Police initially claimed the attack was motivated by anti-gay bias but later said they had "insufficient evidence" to support that motive. Hanna used a "gay panic" defense and his lawyer argued that Hunter touched grabbed his client's crotch and buttocks. Gay activists in the nation's capitol previously complained the United States Attorney’s office did not aggressively prosecute the suspect.

Under the plea arrangement, the maximum possible sentence the 18-year-old Hannah can receive is 180 days in jail. Community activist Keith Jarrell tells WJLA-TV the indictment sends "an alarming message" that violence against the gay and lesbian community is accepted: "The city has turned [its] back on the gay community in many aspects."
Six months in jail for killing a gay man in an unprovoked attack? Why not just give this teenaged killer probation and a cookie if he swears to be a good little boy and not kill any more homos?

10th Annual Al Sura White Attire Affair-Washington DC

This years's White Attire Affair was simply AMAZING! by far one of the best and classy events I have been to in a good long time. From the moment i walked into the doors of the Onyx in Southeast DC at 7pm until I left at 1230am I throughly enjoyed every second of it. From the open bar to the hospitality of the staff to the food and the folks in attendance. The White Attire Affair after being away from a 1 year hiatus it resurface back this year to a small but intimate crowd of 315 people in attendance this year. Even though it did not have thousands of folks in attendance it still lived up to its name and hype and coming back from a rebound. There's nothing wrong starting off small and rebuilding the fundamentals. As a friend put it quality over qaunity is always a plus in my book. You could still have lots of people and a whack event. But I salute Abdul Rahim Briggs and his staff on an breathe taking and rejuvenated event. Stay tuned later this week, hopefully each day i will bring you video and footage from this year's event and if you missed it shame on you! 2010 this will be DC Premiere Event of the year an event not to be missed! I am telling you now July 2010 will be FIRE!

Day 3- Miami Beach Bruthaz- DL Chronicles and Fashion Show

Well, we are entering the last and final day of Miami Beach Bruthaz. And boy, I took alot of pictures and videos yesterday, so give me a minute to add a few. Yesterday's events included a private screening of DL Chronicles. In addition the highly anticipated MBB Fashion Show and After Party. Check out the videos and pictures to get a grasp of all that happened on Day 3.

I only had one gripe about Day 3 and that is regarding the Fashion show. I am a stickler on punctuality, especially when you tell your guests that they will not be seated after the show starts if they are late. So if that is that case, why was the Fashion show late in starting. There were quite a few angry people in line around me and they were making their opinions be known, so MBB just need to tighten up on that. However, the rest of the show including the red carpet photography and videos went off without a hitch. The show eventually started and was off the chain. Every seat was full and became standing room only as more MBB guests, South Beach locals, and out-of-town guests, came in to check out this incredible fashion show. The models, the music, and fashions were all on point. There was very little lull in the action and the fashion show went very smoothly. I attended the MBB fashion show last year at Halo lounge, which was nothing compared to this year's. MBB definitely stepped up their game and raised the bar for all remaining LGBT fashion shows this year. Kudos to Ian and his staff.

Check out Andres Flava tomorrow for final day coverage of Miami Beach Bruthaz '09.

Miami Beach Bruthaz Kicks Off with Bang in South Beach

From the Desk of King in Miami
Follow me on Twitter for updates on MBB and South Florida happenings

If Day 1 is any indication of what is to come this weekend; the fellas who braved plane, trains, and automobiles, are in for one hell-of-a-weekend at Miami Beach Bruthaz. Miami Beach Bruthaz (MBB) is fairly new to the circuit/pride event scene. In Miami, if Sizzle Miami is the older brother, Miami Beach Bruthaz would be its rowdy younger brother who is making waves. Ian Smith, event producer, is definitely running a "quality event" where most of the social and networking events emphasizes the central theme of MBB, knowledge, culture, and fashion.

I had an opportunity to meet Ian and the his staff yesterday at the Swim Meat, a poolside Welcome party at South Beach's Royal Palm Hotel. A very nice and hospitable group of guys. It was a great event with music, bar, and gourmet buffet. Plus I can't forget the sexy fellas from across the country who had a great time getting wet in the beachside pool. I definitely enjoyed myself and the great conversation. Awesome event!

Next, I took a short jog down to Lincoln Road, one of South Beach's great pedestrian malls to another MBB event, Soaked, which was held at Yuca Lounge. I was very excited about this venue, given I had never been to this particular place, and its rave reviews from the South Beach locals. And YES, I was overly pleased! The drinks were reasonably priced and DJ Angel X was spinning like crazy. (Sorry for the mutilple tweets last night about the DJ, but he really was that GOOD.) From the sexy dancers, to the gorgeous venue, to the rockin' DJ, to of course the sexy fellas; I am anxious to see what Ian has in store for us for the next couple of days.

Check out the pictures and video from the Day 1. With more to come over the next few days. For more info on Miami Beach Bruthaz, check out their site, MiamiBeachBruthaz.com

Terrell Carter Response to the Critics

The video is courtesy of Anthony Antoine McWilliams friend of Andresflava and ATL resident who was at the play on yesterday evening.

Terrell Carter is currently in Atlanta taking part in stage play "The Lost Son" and during the play he had a scene where he had to sing "Never Would Have Made" regardless of the fact of how you feel about the man he is indeed a very talented man and does have a promising career. He is to the future looking up and bright for him. who knows maybe in the near future he will address it for those of us in the community we were already well aware of his lifestyle. But as the old saying goes whats done in the dark will come to light. I hate, hate MESSY FOLKS and that Alex Cortez the ex boyfriend of Terrell Carter is MESSY BITTER DRAMA QUEEN that needs to sit down and shut up. THE GAYS I TELL U! UGGH.

Terrell Carter was also appears as "Raheim" on the revised covers for B-Boy Blues, 2nd Time Around, If Only For One Nite, and The Day Eazy-e Died was apparently outed by his ex this week. Life is truly stranger than fiction-that courtesy of legendary author James Early Hardy via his Facebook.

Madea Actor Terrell Carter Outed by Ex

The kids are a buzz about the latest bombshell outing of a celebrity by his ex. First it was Soujah Boy, not Terrell Carter. Who is next????

Article courtesy of http://www2.advocate.com

Actor Terrell Carter, the star of a number of Tyler Perry’s stage productions in his famed Madea series, was outed over the weekend when his ex-boyfriend posted photos on the Internet of himself with Carter.

The actor, who starred in the stage productions of Class Reunion and Meet the Browns as well as the big-screen adaptation of Diary of a Mad Black Woman, had made a name for himself among female fans of Perry's work.

The alleged ex-boyfriend, Alex Cortez, started posting the pictures on various websites last week before featuring them on his MySpace and Twitter accounts, writing: "Hell yeah i’m angry!…there are fucked up ppl out there no matter how nice they seem to be & it’s their fault, ppl they harm are bitter!"

Black gossip blogs have flocked to the photos. Gossip site MediaTakeOut.com has more than 450 comments, while gossip blogger Sandra Rose, who originally reported that Carter was gay earlier this year, wrote that “99% of the actors in Tyler’s movies are gay.”

Michael Jackson Memorial Service 7.7.09

Yesterday from 10am until 4pm was a very gut wretching and emotional time as I watched CNN and witness the funeral of the "King of Pop" as I had my cell in my hand I corresponded wit friends via twitter and facebook who too were indeed emtionally.

This was a great send off and the entire memorial was well put together. From Lionel Richie singing "Jesus is Love" to Stevie Wonder "I Never Dream You Leaved in Summer" to the very pregnant and beautiful Jennifer Hudson singing "Will You Be There" to Revernard Al Sharpton very vocal speech for once he actually made sense " There was nothing strange about michael but what he had to deal with was strange" to Shelia Lee Jackson thte Ro ep from Tx had a good speech as well. John Mayer Instrumental tribute via guitar to "Human Nature" was excellent. To Jermaine Jackson God I don't know how he had the strength and courage to stand up and sing but he sang michael all-time fave song "smile" which was amazing! Usher brought the house down with an very emotional tribute singing "Gone Too Soon" Then came up Britian sensation Shasheen Jafargholi belting out "Who Loving You" then in the end everyone came on stage and sang "We Are The World" after that Marlon Jackson spoke and brought tears to everyone but what did it was me was when Michael daugther Paris spoke and after I was no good.

I did forget to mention Mariah and Trey Lorenz opening the memorial singing "I'll Be There" which Mariah didn't do such a good job but she did later admit via twitter that she was very emotionally and was sorry she didn't give her all. Brooke Sheilds also spoke and gave a emotional speech about her and michael as a couple in his early years.

Judge dismisses effort to block D.C. marriage law

Bishop Harry Jackson, pastor of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., promises to fight the judge's ruling.

Courtesy of Washington Blade

A D.C. judge issued a crippling blow Tuesday to supporters of a referendum to overturn the city’s same-sex marriage recognition law by denying a request for a court injunction to put the law on hold and allow more time to coordinate the referendum.

Superior Court Judge Judith Retchin, in a 15-page decision, also upheld a ruling by the D.C. Board of Elections & Ethics that determined a referendum aimed at barring the city from recognizing same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions would violate a provision of the city’s human rights law that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation.

“At bottom, the harm about which petitioners complain is not based on a denial of the right to referendum,” Retchin says in her decision. “Rather, they simply disagree with legislation enacted by our duly-elected [D.C. City] Council. A citizen’s disagreement with constitutionally sound legislation, whether based on political, religious or moral views, does not rise to the level of an actionable harm.”

The judge added that “because the court finds the [Board of Elections & Ethics] correctly concluded that the proposed referendum would violate the District of Columbia Human Rights Act, and because petitioners have failed to establish the necessary prerequisites for staying the legislation, the Court denies petitioners’ requests for relief.”

The decision represents a victory for gay activists, who strongly opposed a referendum on the marriage issue. It also was a setback for Bishop Harry Jackson Jr., pastor of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., who emerged as the leader of efforts to bar same-sex marriage in the District.

Jackson had said he and his supporters would continue efforts to prevent the city from recognizing same-sex marriage if his side lost their court fight on the referendum.

Following an event Wednesday at the National Press Building, Jackson told the Blade he had not yet learned of the court decision, but he noted that he’d contest a ruling against referendum supporters.

“We will definitely fight it — if that’s the case — yes,” he said.

In her decision, Retchin says Jackson and six others who filed suit against the election board to force the city to hold the referendum wrongly claimed that a 1995 D.C. Court of Appeals decision known as Dean v. District of Columbia held that the Human Rights Act does not apply to marriage related issues, especially same-sex marriage.

Retchin says in her decision that the election board and D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles, who defended the election board on behalf of the city, correctly wrote in court briefs that the Dean decision could no longer be applied to marriage.

An election board attorney and Nickles argued in their briefs that the D.C. City Council had changed the marriage law several times since the Dean decision to make all but one of its provisions gender neutral.

The briefs by the election board and Nickles also argued that the city law recognizing same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions — the Jury & Marriage Amendment Act of 2009 — changed the last remaining obstacle in the city’s marriage law to clear the way for recognition of same-sex marriages from other states or countries.

“With that interpretive framework controlling here, the court finds that Dean does not support petitioners’ position because Dean involved a different factual scenario and presented a different legal question than is before the court,” Retchin says in her decision.

Jackson and his supporters also argued in their court briefs that a court injunction was needed to suspend a July 6 deadline for completing all requirements for placing a referendum on the ballot, including the required petition signatures of about 21,000 registered voters in the city.

Jackson’s attorneys argued in court papers that the city law governing referenda was unfair because it doesn’t allow enough time for citizens to prepare a referendum. The law, which the D.C. Council passed and Congress approved in the late 1970s, requires petition signatures and other referendum requirements to be met between the time the mayor signs a city law passed by the Council and the completion of Congress’s review of the law, which takes 30 legislative days.

In the case of the same-sex marriage recognition law, city officials and members of Congress expect the congressional review to be completed on July 6. With no opposition to the law having surfaced, election board official Kenneth McGhie has said the law would take effect July 7.

Retchin said in her decision that referendum backers were entitled to and received the opportunity given them by law to apply for a referendum through a specific process specified under the law.

“They are not entitled to a favorable ruling on whether their proposed referendum meets the legal requirements of the law,” she said.
