The Urbanworld® Film Festival is an initiative of the Urbanworld® Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 by Stacy Spikes. Urbanworld endeavors to consistently manifest its mission of redefining and advancing the roles of multicultural constituents in contemporary filmed entertainment. By implementing initiatives that actively support and develop content creators of color, Urbanworld significantly contributes to the evolution of the media and entertainment landscape and the diversity that it reflects.

On Friday we have two highlights of the festival

Gun Hill which is 84 mins long stars Larenz Tate stars as Bird and Trane, identical twins on opposite sides of the law. Bird is an undercover agent with a secret task force. Trane is a recently released convict who plays by a different set of rules. When Bird is brutally murdered, Trane assumes his brother’s identity in hopes of finding the killer, and gaining a second chance at life. Grappling with morality, fatherhood and love, Gun Hill asks this question: Can someone who is unredeemable become redeemed?

They Die By Dawn

THEY DIE BY DAWN is a film based on the true life African American Cowboys of the old west. With an all star cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Michael K Williams, Nate Parker, Jesse Williams, Rosario Dawson, Isaiah Washington, Erykah Badu, Bokeem Woodbine and Harry Lennix, the film sets out to tell the story of a showdown between the real life characters.

Nat Love (aka Deadwood Dick), Ben Hodges, Bill Pickett, Jim Beckwourth, Isom Dart, Bose Ickard, the outlaw Rufus Buck and Sheriff Bass Reeves were all famous and infamous cowboys whilst the strong and powerful Stagecoach Mary bore little resemblance to Calamity Jane.

On Saturday evening the highlight of the festival is the premiere of episode 3 of season 4 of Broadway Empire

Boardwalk Empire chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, Atlantic City’s undisputed czar at a time when Prohibition proved to be a major catalyst in the rise of organized crime in America. Season 4 picks up eight months after the end of Season 3, in February 1924 – the year jazz “really came into being,” with fictional dancers/singers as well as the ubiquitous Charleston dance. Having barely survived an overthrow by Gyp Rossetti in Season 3, Nucky Thompson is laying low at the end of the Boardwalk as the season begins.

Sunday the festival ends with the premiere of The Inevitable defeat of Mister and Pete

Coming of age story about two inner city youths, who are left to fend for themselves over the summer after their mothers are taken away by the authorities. The movie stars AYCnthony Mackie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Jeffrey Wright
