"Are We The Kind of Boys We Want?" by Yolo Akili

I was forwarded this great video earlier today by poet Yolo Akil here out of NYC and I wanted to share it with you guys. The poem is called "Are We The Kind of Boys We Want" which is A Docu-Poem on Black Gay Men, Gender & Desire”. The poem talks about the stereotypes or sexual roles and the challenges we as black gay men face when it comes to relationships. The video incles blogger and friend Darian Aaron,Anthony Antoine, singer Anye Elite and a host of other influential black gay leaders here in the community.

Akili says:

I wrote this poem in college after realizing that me and my friends, who would definitely be considered “feminine”, not only never liked boys like us, but often seemed disgusted at them. I began to wonder what it meant when a reflection of you walks by and you are repulsed. The poem is about just that, pondering what that kind of behavior means for our own self esteem and self image in the context of gender and sexuality.

1 yr Later Remeberind Andre Allen Sr. 8/7/61-3/19/10

This last year has been a world wind of an emotional roller coaster for me with so much going on from school to a relationsip to moving to NYC now to dealing on a daily basis with the death of my father who passed away today last year. I was an emotional wreck and had a break down due to the fact that i didnt get to getanswers to questions that I was longing for my entire life as to why this man didnt want to be apart of my life. Now that he is gone he is permantely gone and i will never be able to ask the questions. Growing up Iwas able to kind of adjust not having him around and i came to the realization early this week talking to my mother that I acted out and was a bad child growing up due to me wantin to fill that void that i so desperately needed and wanted in my life and couldnt have. And now my litter sister is going through what me and my mom have come to the conclusion that she is going through that void of not having her dad around who has been in and out of prison. With my father he just didnt want anything to do with his 4 kids. But I do miss the man dearly strangely enough and hope to reunite with him in heaven get to get that bond that i didnt have when he was present here on earth.

If there was ever a better time to be in Miami, it would be RIGHT NOW. Spring fever is in high gear in South Florida and I am now just catching my breath. With Calle Ocho, a one day 23-block long "Block Party", last Sunday with over 1 million party goers, to our annual Spring Break pilgrimage of thousands of college students. Miami is filled to capacity in the city and also on South Beach. And don't let me forget the Winter Music Conference and the Winter Party just finishing up with thousands of tourists and guests. I have been partying non-stop. And it has taken it's toll. In addition the Soul Unleashed BBQ in Downtown Miami this past weekend, with a few of my closet friends. Good BBQ, great music, and a few cuties as well. Sorry if I forgot anyone's name at the BBQ, it was alot of mo-fo's there. And South Florida are still going strong....We still have the Ultra Music Festival which will attract thousands of techno heads, coming up and the Miami Dade Youth Fair cranks up next week, where I will be performing. With stars, such as Flo-rida, Trina, and Pitbull performing at Calle Ocho, to the occassion star-sighting on Ocean Drive; it's time to pack your bags and head to Miami for a little rest and relaxation. Did I tell you that Trina will be at the Vault Miami ( on Friday along with one of her new artists? It's 80 degrees right now without a cloud in a sky. I think the ocean is calling me, so let me go for now.....

3 weeks ago I decided to step out on faith and finally start to live my dreams and aspirations so that I can contiinue to better myself as well as the community I serve and to some is a voice for. # years of living in misery and not being totally happy has broght me to this point where i am right now, Living in the Big City of New York and even though the lights are shining bright i will conquer the city and in the  process hopefully united a community that is divided. I was having a conversation early this morning with a mentor and we discussed the dysfunctionalism that us bloggers have come too. I remeber waking up when blogging was first the IT thing and reading the blogs of Keith Boykin, Frank Roberts, Trent Jackson, Derrick Briggs, Clay Cane, Rodney Snell and a host of other young talented black gay men that looked like me voicing their opinions on issues affecting our community..
